Global reputation riding high

Published: 12 March 2015

The University of Edinburgh was ranked 29 in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2015, which surveys more than 100 of the world’s most prestigious universities.

It is the first time that Edinburgh has reached the top 30 in this ranking. The result is an improvement on last year’s rating, when the University was placed 46th in the world.

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings is published annually by weekly education publication Times Higher Education. It is the largest invitation-only survey of its kind, judged by more than 10,000 senior academics from 142 countries across the world.

Our rise in these rankings is not only great news for the University but also for Scotland. It is a tribute to the quality of our staff and students and confirms the University of Edinburgh as one of the world’s leading research and teaching establishments whose activity is having an impact on a truly global scale.
Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea, Principal, The University of Edinburgh

The results come after the announcement in December of the University’s strong performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. Based on the quality and breadth of its research, the REF placed Edinburgh fourth in the UK and first in Scotland.

This is the fifth year Times Higher Education has published its reputation rankings.

The rankings are both an indicator of global prestige and a predictor of future global prestige – because a top global reputation has real-world effects, helping institutions to attract the best global talent, to forge strong international partnerships and to attract investment. So we are particularly proud that the research underpinning the rankings this year is the most thorough and comprehensive to date.
Phil Baty, Times Higher Education World University Rankings

The survey is carried out in partnership with academic publishing company Elsevier, with academic judges selected by their publication record.
