Pupils gain insight into scientific careers

Youngsters from 26 high schools are taking part in the free programme, which gives them the opportunity to shadow researchers in the workplace and get involved with experiments.

Now in its fourth year, the University of Edinburgh’s Science Insights programme includes workshops and discussions about research ethics and careers in science.

Visiting pupils are being shown around the University’s cutting edge scientific facilities at four campuses across the city.

All 38 participants are about to enter their final year at high schools in Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian, Fife and the Scottish Borders.

The initiative aims to inspire school pupils to consider careers in science, medicine or veterinary medicine.

Pupils will also receive advice from the University’s Student Recruitment team to help them with university and job applications.

Science Insights is an annual programme started by the University’s Medical Research Council Institute of Genetics & Molecular Medicine and The Roslin Institute.

In 2016, the scheme expanded to include all research institutes in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.
