Pentlands Science Park is home to the world-leading Moredun Research Institute, leaders in animal health and independently ranked as one of the top ten animal research institutes worldwide.

Pentlands Science Park was established in 1994, owned by The Moredun Foundation, and a thriving scientific community providing an ideal location for research and commercial groups. The Park is active in encouraging collaboration between tenants, as part of its commitment to the biotechnology sector. 

Co-located with the Moredun Research Institute, with an established global reputation for the high quality of its scientific research to improve farm animal health and welfare, through the prevention and control of infectious diseases of livestock.

Doherty Building
 

The Doherty Building provides high quality office and lab accommodation over ground and first floor. The building was built in 1996 and is of pavilion design. It has a large double height atrium, toilet and kitchen facilities on ground and first floor levels as well as a passenger lift.

Room 3: currently fitted out as lab space, located on ground floor and extending to 710 sq ft (65.96 sq m).

Room 9: currently fitted out as cellular office space and located on the first floor, extending to 710 sq ft (65.96 sq m). The accommodation can be provided with existing fit-out or stripped back to an open plan configuration.


Rooms 12,14 & 15: currently fitted out as open plan offices, located on 1st floor and extending to 2,572 sq ft (238.95 sq m). The accommodation currently has interlinking openings however these could be blocked up to provide three separate spaces and can be converted into lab and or office accommodation.

Glencorse Building

The Glencorse building is located at the rear of the site and is a two storey building with lab and office space at ground floor level with a large plant room located on the first floor of the building. The building was built in 1999.

Lab space: currently fitted out as lab and office space and extends to 2,422 sq ft (225.01 sq m) with separate CAT 3 lab space. There is a separate office, with a second entrance to main lab area. 

Douglas House

Douglas House building was one of the first buildings to be built on the site completing in 1996. It is located at the front of the site and is a two storey pavilion building.

Lab space: located on the ground floor and  currently fitted out as a lab and office space, extending to 3,684 sq ft (342.25 sq m).

Facilities and Services

The world class animal clinical facilities are exclusive to Scotland and complement laboratory based research.  Pentlands Science Park currently extends to 22 acres and provides around 160,000 square feet of high quality laboratory and office space designed to meet varied requirements from start-up companies and mature companies involved in research and development, through to manufacturing and testing.

In recent years, Pentlands Science Park has been almost fully occupied and outline planning is now approved for a 20 acre site expansion.

Pentlands Science Park provides a wide range of support services which include IT, security, engineering, waste disposal, central stores, catering, cleaning, café, library, meeting rooms and conference facilities.  Tenants also benefit from the wider facilities provided by the Moredun Research Institute.

Meetings and Conferences

On-site conference facilities are flexible and suitable for small informal meetings, workshops to day and multi-day conferences, including evening and weekend functions and  include a lecture theatre, fully equipped meeting rooms, video conferencing and audio-visual equipment.

Tenants and visitors have access to the Park Café which offers meals and refreshments throughout the day and provide a selection of catering packages for light receptions and seated dinners.

Collaboration

Pentlands Science Park actively promotes interaction and collaboration between tenant companies and The Moredun Group has active partnerships and collaborations with research institutes and universities, sharing knowledge worldwide.

The Moredun Communications Centre was established in 2007 and has developed new knowledge transfer initiatives and seeks to form stronger links and provide additional benefits to a broad range of stakeholders including farmers, veterinarians, the scientific community, government policy makers and also to develop educational links and programmes to interact with schools.

In August 2015, Pentlands Science Park announced the appointment of Mr Ian Forbes as a Director of the Company. Ian has both a property and farming background and his knowledge and skills will make a significant contribution to the future direction of the science park.

Contract Research Services

Moredun Scientific is a GLP/GMP accredited contract research organisation specialising in animal health and aquaculture product development and biosafety testing of biopharmaceuticals.

  • Animal Health - broad range of infectious disease models, expertise and extensive facilities to progress the development of livestock vaccine and therapeutic products.

  • Aquaculture - contract research services to support the development of fish health products for the aquaculture sector. Efficacy and safety studies in aquaculture species.

  • Biosafety Testing - regulatory compliant testing of biopharmaceuticals and cell lines to ensure products are free from contamination with adventitious agents.

EPP Ltd is a GLP contract research organization (CRO), based at Pentlands Scence Park, supporting agrochemical, human & animal pharmaceutical and industrial chemical sectors.

The organisation provides GLP analytical, physico-chemical and environmental testing in accordance with worldwide regulations such as OECD, ISO, and OPPTS with experienced staff working across three core areas:

  • Analytical and Screening
  • Environmental Sciences
  • Process Research and Development (R&D)

Location

Pentlands Science Park is situated 8 miles south of Edinburgh city centre in an attractive woodland setting close to the Pentland Hills and only minutes from Edinburgh Airport, Edinburgh City By-pass and other main transport links.

A link road joins Pentlands Science Park with Edinburgh Technopole which brings both social and commercial benefits to both parks. Pentlands Science Park acts as a security hub and assists both Edinburgh Technopole and the adjoining Scottish Enterprise manufacturing BioCampus with security services.

Pentlands Science Park and Moredun Research Institute are at the centre of the world leading animal bioscience cluster close to The Roslin Institute on the Easter Bush Campus which presents further opportunities.
