The University of Edinburgh, Easter Bush Campus

The University of Edinburgh's Easter Bush Campus in Midlothian is a world-leading research, work and study environment. At the heart of a growing cluster of bioscience organisations, the Campus acts as a hub of activity bringing together partners and other stakeholders within the region and beyond.

The University of Edinburgh's Easter Bush Campus is part of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (CMVM) delivering world-leading research, education and innovation in the core disciplines of medicine, veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences. It creates a powerful alliance of basic research, applied research and clinical veterinary expertise and forms one of the largest groups focussed on the biology of companion and production animals in the world.

Gathered on one site, a multidisciplinary grouping of animal scientists within The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, incorporating the Roslin Institute and the Global Academy for Agriculture and Food Systems, alongside a number of interdisciplinary centres and research collaborators, provides a level of expertise that is unrivalled elsewhere in the world.

Together they aim to make a real difference to animal, environmental and human health, and the alliance with Edinburgh Medical School is summed up in the ethos One Health.

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies

Research spans all aspects of veterinary medicine, from molecules and genes through to animal and human populations. Informally referred to as the 'Dick Vet,' it is the veterinary school of The University of Edinburgh, and part of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (CMVM).

Roslin Institute

Incorporated within the School, this is the major centre of research. This multidisciplinary grouping of animal scientists provides a level of expertise unrivalled elsewhere in the world. Together, they aim to make a real difference to animal and human health, that is in essence a One Health partnership.

Global Academy for Agriculture and Food Systems

A leading interdisciplinary hub of researchers, teachers and students working to develop and improve the effectiveness and sustainability of agri-food systems. Research and associated education and engagement are across two broad themes – Food System Transformation and Healthy People, Healthy Planet.

Campus Development

Easter Bush Campus has expanded with a staged approach of major redevelopment in line with a 20 year Masterplan which represents a strong element of the economic investment for the local area, with Midlothian Council a committed partner in the development of the Campus and the overall Masterplan.

This development provides an opportunity to establish a world-leading centre in Europe, in an area with the critical mass that is necessary to underpin the viability of investing in animal sciences, alongside major developments in human biosciences. The ability to engage with world class researchers in these fields, provides great opportunities for companies looking to locate in Midlothian.

The University of Edinburgh Easter Bush Campus has approximately 27,000m2 of usable space, with the key facilities of teaching and learning, research, animal facilities and support distributed across Campus.

Completed Projects

Phase 1

The first phase of development was completed at the end of 2012, providing facilities for clinical, teaching and research.

Phase 2

The second phase was completed at the end of 2014 with the construction of two buildings (Greenwood and Bumstead) related to the National Avian Research Facility (NARF) - a specified pathogen free unit to support avian research work and dedicated laboratory and husbandry space to support avian research.

Phase 3

In March 2015, the third phase of development commenced with the construction of the Roslin Innovation Centre, completed in the summer of 2017.

Roslin Innovation Centre  provides shared facilities for students, staff and visitors, consisting of state-of-the-art research facilities, teaching and exhibition space, as well as ancillary accommodation, support services and the Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre.

Phase 4

The Energy Centre which provides a robust, flexible and low carbon infrastructure to heat and cool the buildings on Campus, as well as meeting a significant proportion of the base electrical demand on the site. Future expansion or stages of the project may consider the supply of heat to third party buildings and development to include an Estates hub and freezer farm.

Development of childcare facilities commenced in spring 2018, an essential project due to the increased current and future demand for these facilities, as a result of the continued expansion of the Easter Bush Campus.

Phase 4 development included the construction of the Equine Diagnostic, Surgical and Critical Care Unit (EDSCCU) which commenced in May 2016, and replaced the existing theatre at the Dick Vet Equine Hospital with a new, high specification facility, housing two operating theatres and two induction boxes. In addition, the new facility will house reception, x-ray and ultrasound services, a viewing area, intensive care unit, a separate isolation block and suitable external vehicular access with hoist facility.

Phase 5

The development of the Large Animal Research and Imaging Facility (LARIF) includes laboratory and animal holding facilities as well as advanced imaging equipment, including CT and MRI scanning facilities for large animals and equine use.

The Aquaculture Genetics Research Facility (AGRF) is a state-of-the-art freshwater aquarium facility designed for research into early-life stages of farmed fish species. Equipped with hatchery and disease challenge facilities, it is integral to groundbreaking research on Campus.

The Advanced Computing Facility is a new building at Easter Bush accommodating a new High Resiliency Computer Room and associated plant areas to house and support the computer equipment and office space.

The World Class Data Infrastructure (WCDI), Edinburgh International Data Facility, is a core component of the Data Driven Innovation (DDI) Programme that forms an integral part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Deal investment proposition.

New Development

Beeslack Community High School is to relocate from its current site to land adjacent to Easter Bush from August 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The school, which will be a STEM Centre of Excellence, will be able to accommodate 1600 pupils. Built to Scottish Government energy-efficient standards meaning it will have low carbon emissions, it will also have a swimming pool and community facilities, including an artificial sports pitch and grass pitches.

Location

Easter Bush Campus is located eight miles to the south of Edinburgh city centre near Penicuik. It incorporates The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, the Roslin Institute, an Agri-Tech Hub and several other research institutes and laboratories.
