Increased capacity for mycoplasma testing at Moredun Scientific

Moredun Scientific has recently increased capacity for Mycoplasma testing in the Biosafety Division. Mycoplasma testing is an essential step in the development and manufacture of biopharmaceuticals, ensuring that they are free from contamination, and many manufacturers outsource this specialised testing to companies such as Moredun Scientific who carry out testing in compliance with European and United States pharmacopoeial regulations and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

The original Mycoplasma testing facility was set up in the High Security Unit (HSU) on Pentlands Science Park in 2008, but growth in the service has led to a need for more space to accommodate current testing requirements and to allow for further expansion in the future. A unit in the Glencorse Building, also on Pentlands Science Park, was identified as a suitable facility for relocation. Although the unit required significant adaptation it provided the ideal space for expansion.

Aided by funding from Scottish Enterprise the unit was adapted to provide segregated testing spaces. A tissue culture / media preparation laboratory with integrated cold room storage and individual Mycoplasma negative and Mycoplasma positive laboratories were created. This has provided a significant expansion to the laboratory space, providing improvements to process flow and testing capacity. The laboratory is accredited by the UK regulatory authority, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The new facility became fully operational in January 2024 and is enabling Moredun Scientific to meet the growth in client Mycoplasma testing requirements.
